Policy on Monitoring Resident Fatigue

Faculty are committed to ACGME and institutional guidelines regarding resident fatigue

  1. The vascular resident is ensured relief of clinical responsibilities one in seven days.  Duty hours are limited to 80 per week over a running four-week average.
  2. Each faculty member has participated in specific educational activities designed to heighten awareness of the significance of resident fatigue. The vascular surgery faculty have been instructed in the recognition of signs of resident fatigue and have been instructed to notify the program director if signs exist.
  3. The program director will relieve the vascular resident of clinical responsibilities in the event that excessive fatigue is observed.  The vascular surgery attending will be responsible for arranging coverage of clinical responsibilities in the absence of the resident.
