Methods for Selecting Vascular Resident

 Policy:

The recruitment and appointment of residents into the Vascular Surgery Residency Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is based on the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  The Vascular Residency Program at UAMS does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

Application Process:

  1. Applications to the Vascular Surgery Residency Program are submitted         through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
  2. Completed applications should include three letters of recommendation (one of which should be from the program director of their general surgery program indicating Board eligibility) and a statement of personal goals.
  3. Invitations are sent to applicants selected for interview.  (Other applicants receive a thank you letter for their application.)
  4. During interviews, each applicant is given a copy of the Benefits and    Terms & Conditions for Appointment (Employment) and asked to sign an attestation to that effect.

Eligibility:

  1. An applicant must be able to carry out the required duties.
  2. An applicant must demonstrate satisfactory English language proficiency.
  3. An applicant must be a graduate of a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or a graduate of a medical school outside the United States or Canada with a currently valid certificate from the Education Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
  4. Applicants should submit applications through ERAS only, unless unavailable, and must be a participant in the National Resident Matching   Program (NRMP).
  5. An applicant must have completed five years of general surgery training in an ACGME-accredited program.
  6. An applicant is eligible for appointment only after a negative result on a pre-employment drug test as administered by the UAMS Drug Testing Program.

Selection:

Only complete applications are considered, and all of the vascular surgery faculty reviews each application, which includes letters of recommendation, a statement of personal goals, and a curriculum vitae.  Each candidate is reviewed by each vascular surgery faculty and selected on the following criteria:
          1.       Review/confirmation of eligibility requirements.
          2.       Clinical training experience
          3.       Letters of recommendation from faculty
          4.       Verbal communication skills
          5.       Prior research and publications
          6.       Maturity and emotional stability
          7.       Honesty, integrity, and reliability
          8.       Demonstrated ability to set and complete goals
          9.       Motivation to pursue career in vascular surgery
